NYS Direct Access
In New York State, you can see a physical therapist without a doctor's referral.
What is Direct Access?
Direct Access means you have the legal right to see a licensed physical therapist directly — without needing a physician's referral or prescription first.
All 50 states, including New York, now allow some form of direct access to physical therapy. In New York, you can receive evaluation and treatment from a physical therapist for up to 10 visits or 30 days (whichever comes first) without a physician referral.
This law empowers you to seek expert care immediately when you're in pain or recovering from injury, rather than waiting days or weeks for a doctor's appointment.
Important Note About Insurance
While New York State allows direct access, some insurance plans may still require a physician referral for coverage. We recommend checking with your insurance provider before your first visit. Our team is happy to help verify your benefits.
